Henties Bay: A Premier Fishing Destination

Henties Bay, a beloved holiday town renowned for its tranquil atmosphere, moderate climate, and unspoiled beaches, is a haven for fishing enthusiasts. Attracting visitors, particularly from South Africa, the town offers exceptional opportunities for shore fishing and boat angling trips. As part of the Skeleton Coast, it carries a rich history of maritime adventures and shipwrecks. However, despite its potential, the town faces significant economic challenges with a 70% unemployment rate among residents. The local municipality is keen on industrializing parts of the town to generate employment and income, envisioning a future with a waterfront and beautified beach areas for both locals and tourists to enjoy.

Sustainable Land Development Conference

Recently, Henties Bay hosted a three-day land development conference, focusing on sustainable urban growth. The mayor emphasized the importance of land development in fostering community prosperity while balancing environmental stewardship. Participants discussed innovative solutions and best practices to achieve these goals. The Minister of Urban and Rural Development underscored the need for equitable access to land and housing, aiming to restore the dignity of all Namibians. Furthermore, the Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform highlighted the necessity for local authorities to include more economic activities in their development plans, ensuring value addition and job creation.

Future Water Supply: New Desalination Plant

In a significant step towards ensuring a sustainable water supply, the Namibian government, through NamWater, has approved the construction of a second desalination plant near Henties Bay. This new plant, expected to start operations by 2027, will have a capacity of 20 to 25 million cubic meters of water annually. The project aims to address the growing water demand and mitigate potential water crises. Additionally, proper sanitation systems are being prioritized, with the government recognizing the urgent need to refurbish and expand existing infrastructure to meet high standards and support further development. The Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform Carl Schlettwein, stressed the impact of climate change on water availability and the importance of policy choices to mitigate risks affecting water supply and agriculture.

Henties Bay is at a pivotal point in its development, balancing its rich fishing heritage with modern industrial and urban growth. The local government’s efforts to attract investment, ensure sustainable land development, and secure water supply are crucial steps towards a prosperous future. These initiatives promise to enhance the quality of life for residents and solidify Henties Bay’s status as a prime destination for both tourists and investors.
